Beer purists may cringe at the idea of putting a scoop of ice cream in a good stout, but don’t knock it until you try it. A really great premium vanilla ice cream works incredibly well with the chocolate, coffee, & roasted notes of the stout. When the ice cream melts, a sort of beer milkshake forms - a really delicious treat.

Mobile 2HD: Beef Tips at Old Pecan Cafe in Austin.

Mobile 2HD: Beef Tips at Old Pecan Cafe in Austin.

365 Days of Food

#71 Headcheese (via TwoHungryDudes)

The headcheese made locally by Detroit’s own Corridor Sausage Co. is transcendent. Huge porky flavor, excellent texture, and perfect contrast with the baguette & Sauce Gribiche. You would be hard pressed to find a better bite of deliciousness.

The headcheese was made for the Michigan Beer Tasting at Cloverleaf Fine Wine in Royal Oak, MI.

Beer Review - McSorley's - Irish Pale Ale

For everyone’s favorite beer holiday I figured I would try a Irish inspired beer. Calling itself an Irish Pale Ale McSorleys feels more like an interesting cross between an India Pale Ale and and an Irish Red Ale. With a light copper color, thin white head, and, a flowery and sweet wheat smell to it it’s easy to say that it caught me a little off guard at first. McSorley starts out strong and bitter with hints of flowers, smoke, and pine, and I honestly thought thats all it had to offer, but once I took a few more sips I got a strong wheat sweetness on the finish. McSorley’s is full bodied and dry (the only way I can reasonably describe it), and it comes on strong and just when you think it’s over it gives you a sweet almost hefeweizen finish. I have rarely had a beer this much in two different places both a pale ale and a red ale. McSorleys is a nice option if your a bitter beer lover (hop-head) looking for a change of pace or if you like red ales (Smithwick’s, or Sam Adam’s Irish Red) but are looking for something with a little more bite to it.

Although my favorite kibbeh dish is nayeh (raw), soneyeh is a close second. Literally translated, kibbeh bel soneyeh means kibbeh in a tray. Soneyeh is has 3 layers: 2 layers of kibbeh with a layer of hashwi in between. A spicy & rich dish, kibbeh soneyeh pairs well with pita & leban.

A carryout from Jumps Restaurant in Grosse Pointe, this bread pudding had an intense almond flavor. Perfectly sweet with a touch of tartness from the dried cherries, this was a truly luscious dessert. Rich, but not heavy. The vanilla creme anglaise added an eggy/creamy dimension. A really nice dessert.

Hello readers!

On the recommendation of my friend @wattyz, I’ve been on the lookout for this traditional Thai dessert. It just so happened that Trader Joe’s started carrying it in the frozen section this week.

A tremendously interesting dessert - sweet tropical mango, salty & creamy sticky rice with coconut milk, and crunchy (pretty much flavorless) mung beans all come together perfectly. A special treat indeed & one that I’ll be revisiting very soon.

365 Days of Food

#65 Chili Fries (via JoeFoodie)

Michigan (especially near Detroit) is known for their “coney islands,” diners that specialize in serving quick food usually of a deep fried nature with menus items like casing hot dogs in a steamed bun with chili sauce, mustard, & onions on top. That chili is also pretty awesome on fries, especially after a night of partying.

I could eat carrot cake everyday. Cinnamon & nutmeg are such comforting flavors for me. When made properly, this is a tremendously moist & luscious cake with chewy bits of carrot-y goodness. This version has a orange glaze, which matched perfectly with the spiciness of the cake.

Beer Review - Spoetzl - Shiner Bock

Shiner Bock is the flagship beer of the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, TX. This is an older recipe (originally brewed in 1913) and has a nice dark amber color very similar to a black tea, with a thin light (almost white) head. Shiner Bock has a very malty smell almost like a lager or pilsner, with hints of caramel behind. As for taste Shiner Bock starts clean and fresh on the palate and more surprisingly a little on the thin side (at least thinner than most other Bocks I’ve had) and ends with an earthy or charcoal like bitterness reminiscent of a stout, but again on the thin side. This is different from most bocks I’ve had which usually have a nutty or oak like flavor, Shiner Bock on the other hand has a malty clean flavor with a more noticeable bitter ending. If you are looking for a beer to start venturing away from lagers this wouldn’t be a bad choice. With a crisp clean start and a slightly bitter finish I think this might be a decent entry level bitter beer, as it’s not as bitter as most pale ales, but definitely more bitter than the traditional lager or light beer. In terms of comparison it’s almost a Labatt Blue start with a bitter nut ale finish, like Newcastle or Moose Drool.

The oven at Crust in Rochester Hills, MI burns at a temperature above 800 degrees fahrenheit. However, the crust was not as crisp I would’ve thought. Under the weight of the very fresh tasting tomatoes, the creamy cheese, and tender basil, I think the crust just gave way. Regardless, this was a delicious pizza - simple & well prepared.

Submitted by jdsalinger
